A march honouring 19-year-old Kaleym Davy is planned for Saturday, August 22, in Toronto, as his family continues to seek answers surrounding his death and raises money for funeral, burial and legal expenses.
Davy was shot and killed on August 6 following a police interaction on Delfi Road in Mississauga, near The Collegeway and Winston Churchill Boulevard. According to Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, which is investigating the incident, officers from Toronto police had located a Mercedes reported stolen in Toronto the previous day. The vehicle was tracked to that location in Mississauga.
During the interaction, three unmarked police vehicles collided with the Mercedes, which carried four occupants. One officer discharged their firearm into the vehicle, striking the driver. Davy was pronounced dead at the scene. The three other occupants were taken into custody, and one police officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The SIU has assigned four investigators, three forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Davy's family has launched a GoFundMe campaign with a public goal of $45,000, though the family says its overall target is $100,000. As of publication, the fundraiser had collected close to $9,000. The money will support funeral and burial expenses, as well as legal fees and representation as the family considers pursuing legal action. "Our goal is not only to give Kaleym the farewell he deserves, but also to help family find answers and pursue justice," the campaign states. The march begins at 1 p.m., though organisers have not publicly disclosed the location; those wishing to attend are asked to contact organisers directly.
