Lawyers Seek to Close Courtroom in Kirk Murder Trial

Defense attorneys for Charlie Kirk's accused killer ask to seal evidence and seal portions of key hearing.

Lawyers for Tyler Robinson, accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, filed motions Tuesday to close portions of a key hearing and seal certain evidence—a request coming after a judge already rejected their bid to ban cameras from court entirely.

Robinson's defense team has argued that broadcasts of proceedings create a media frenzy that misrepresents their client's case and jeopardizes his right to a fair trial. While the judge denied the camera ban, the defense is pushing to at least shield specific evidence and testimony from public view.

The case has drawn intense media attention since Kirk's death. The defense contends that live coverage amplifies sensationalism and makes it harder to present Robinson's side of the story factually. Prosecutors and media advocates argue that open courtrooms serve the public interest and that sealing documents sets a troubling precedent for transparency.

Tuesday's hearing will determine how much of the trial remains visible to the public and press—a balance between fair trial rights and the constitutional principle of open justice.
