The Toronto Maple Leafs traded pending restricted free agent Nick Robertson to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2028.
Robertson, 24, produced career-highs of 16 goals and 32 points in 78 games last season on a one-year, $1.825-million contract. The move reunites him with Kyle Dubas, who drafted him to Toronto in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2019 NHL draft and now serves as the Penguins' president of hockey operations.
The trade came as free agency opened at noon ET on Wednesday, a busy day in the league. The Ottawa Senators re-signed forward Nick Cousins to a two-year deal worth $3.175 million US, keeping the 32-year-old from Belleville from hitting the open market. Cousins, who won a Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in 2024, registered nine goals and 23 points in 81 games for Ottawa last season.
In Montreal, the Canadiens locked up young star Ivan Demidov with an eight-year, $73.2-million US contract extension. Demidov, 20, led all NHL rookies with 62 points last season and finished second in Calder Trophy voting.
