The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be a legitimate option for Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Zach Werenski, the reigning Norris Trophy winner.

According to reporting Tuesday night, Werenski declined a potential move to Dallas and expressed a preference to stay in the Eastern Conference. Tampa Bay is viewed as his top choice, but Toronto is the one Canadian team the 28-year-old would waive his full no-movement clause for.

Werenski has two years left on his six-year, $57-million contract. He recorded more than 80 points for the second straight year while capturing the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenceman.

Columbus is exploring the market with concerns Werenski may not re-sign when his contract expires following the 2027-28 season. The Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers are also rumoured to be in the mix.

For Toronto, Werenski's arrival would reunite him with captain Auston Matthews. The two came through the U.S. National Team Development Program together and most recently won gold at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Some insiders suggest the trade may not require Toronto to part with Matthew Knies.
