Brandon Carlo has been traded to the St. Louis Blues for two third-round picks, marking the Maple Leafs' final move to undo their 2025 trade deadline deals.
General manager John Chayka used the picks to select 18-year-olds Zach Olsen (No. 73 overall) and Mans Gudmundsson (No. 76) at the draft in Buffalo on Saturday. Olsen, a Calgary native and six-foot-one right winger, scored 18 goals and 34 points in 57 games with the Saskatoon Blades. Gudmundsson is a Swedish playmaking defenceman who recently joined Farjestad's pro team.
Carlo, 29, had been shopped around since last season without success. The generous package the Leafs originally paid Boston — centre Fraser Minten, an unprotected 2028 first-round pick, and a 2025 fourth-round pick — hung over his time here. He recorded just 10 points and zero goals in 88 games for Toronto, including playoffs, a franchise record for games played without scoring.
While a reliable penalty killer and tough defender, Carlo lacks the puck-moving and offensive abilities Chayka is seeking on the blueline. With top-pair right winger Darren Raddysh and shutdown defenceman Chris Tanev rehabbing and set for training camp, Carlo had slipped to third on the depth chart.
