Leylah Fernandez's run at the National Bank Open ended Sunday when 11th seed Naomi Osaka overpowered the Canadian 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16 at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto.
The 23-year-old from Laval was the last Canadian remaining in either the men's or women's singles draws. Osaka won 76 percent of points on her first serve and 75 percent on her second serve, and was broken just once by Fernandez. She clinched the match with her seventh ace.
Fernandez had cruised through her opening two matches with straight-sets wins over Renata Zarazua and fifth-seeded Mirra Andreeva before running out of gas against Osaka.
Canada won't have a singles champion at the National Bank Open this year. Victoria Mboko, who won the tournament last year, was unable to defend her title due to knee injury.
Osaka advances to the quarterfinals to face second-seeded Elena Rybakina, who defeated Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 on Sunday. Rybakina fired 11 aces in that Round of 16 match.
Canada still retains a title shot in men's doubles, where Alexis Galarneau and Duncan Chan will face third-seeded Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo in the quarterfinals on Monday.
