Summer McIntosh has withdrawn from the Canadian swimming trials in Montreal due to illness, ending her competition after a stellar start that included breaking the women's 200m butterfly world record.

The 19-year-old from Toronto posted the fastest time in the 400m freestyle heats Tuesday morning, July 7, but scratched from that final and all remaining events on the advice of Swimming Canada doctors and her coach Bob Bowman. "I started feeling ill yesterday morning, and while I hoped I'd be able to keep racing, this is the right decision," she said in a statement.

McIntosh's withdrawal came just two days after she eclipsed the longest-standing women's world record in swimming. On Sunday, July 5, she clocked 2:01.65 in the 200 butterfly, breaking the previous record set in 2009 — a record that had stood for 6,101 days.

On Monday evening, she also recorded the fastest 400 individual medley time in the world this year with a time of 4:27.35. She was scheduled to compete in the 200 individual medley on Wednesday.

McIntosh has now secured her spot on the Canadian team for the Pan Pacific Championships in mid-August in Irvine, California. She holds four individual world records: the 200 individual medley, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle, and 400 individual medley.
