Summer McIntosh won gold in the women's 400-metre individual medley Thursday night at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California, finishing in a championship record time of 4:28.01.
The Toronto swimmer briefly dipped under her own world-record pace early in the race. She qualified second-fastest for the eight-woman final and led all the way, defeating Australia's Jenna Forrester, who took silver in 4:31.50. Argentina's Agostina Hein, 18, claimed bronze.
McIntosh's victory came a day after she placed second in the 200 freestyle to Australia's Lani Pallister. She said she was "trying to forget about it" and wanted to "attack the race" in the medley. "I was really pumped up," she said. "It's good to get the win."
McIntosh also helped Canada earn bronze in the women's 4 x 200 freestyle relay. Australia won that event, with the American team taking silver.
