Toronto police have arrested a man in connection with an arson attack at the home of Liberal MP Salma Zahid in Scarborough on August 27.

Roshvin Crofton, 24, was arrested Sunday and charged with arson causing damage to property, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of incendiary material, and failure to comply with a probation order. The charges were announced in a police news release Friday.

In the early morning hours of August 27, an unknown suspect poured accelerant on vehicles parked in the driveway of Zahid's home near Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East and ignited them. Two vehicles caught fire and a third was damaged from the flames. A 2025 Hyundai Sonata believed to be involved in the incident was seized. Police are searching for a second suspect.

Zahid, a Liberal backbencher representing Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East since 2015, chairs the standing committee on science and research and serves as vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association. In a statement released Friday, Zahid said: "I welcome word of an arrest and charges related to the arson incident outside my home on August 27th, and news the police are seeking an additional suspect in relation to this case. As the investigation is ongoing, we still do not have information with regards to a motive for this incident."

The incident drew condemnation from numerous politicians including Prime Minister Mark Carney. The investigation is ongoing, and the city has not disclosed court dates or bail conditions for Crofton.
