A 58-year-old Toronto man has been charged in connection with a suspected hate-motivated assault that occurred June 25, near Jane Street and Lawrence Avenue West around 12:10 p.m.

According to Toronto Police, the suspect approached the victim without provocation and yelled anti-Israeli slurs before picking up rocks and other items from the street and repeatedly throwing them while uttering death threats. Police said the victim was targeted because of their religious attire and sustained minor physical injuries.

Abdulkadir Al-Jelani was arrested and charged with three counts of assault with a weapon and one count of uttering death threats. He was scheduled to appear in Toronto court on June 26. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Investigators are treating the incident as a suspected hate-motivated offence, which means the Crown attorney's office may be consulted. If convicted, hate could be considered an aggravating factor during sentencing.
