Ontario paramedics launch medical drone pilot to deliver emergency supplies

Peel Regional Paramedic Services in Ontario is launching a medical drone pilot program this month, deploying unmanned aircraft to deliver life-saving equipment to emergency scenes in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon.

The drones, operating from a Bolton station, will carry automated external defibrillators, epinephrine auto-injectors, naloxone, and trauma supplies for severe bleeding. They operate within a four-kilometre radius approved by Transport Canada, descending to around feet above the ground before dropping a supply bag.

The program is designed to support residents during critical minutes before paramedics arrive—not to replace emergency responders. In time-sensitive emergencies such as sudden cardiac arrest, opioid overdose or severe allergic reactions, the drones typically arrive three to eight minutes ahead of paramedics.

"In emergencies such as sudden cardiac arrest, opioid overdose, or severe allergic reactions, every second counts," Peel Regional Paramedic Services said in a statement. Paul Snobelen, a community programs specialist with the service, noted the mission-specific value: "getting time-sensitive medical supplies to someone ahead of paramedics."

When a drone is dispatched, a paramedic or drone operator radios 911 dispatchers to advise that the package has been dropped. Dispatchers then inform callers if a drone has been sent. Bystanders receive guidance from trained paramedics and emergency dispatchers on how to use the equipment via phone or video connection until crews arrive.

The program depends on location, timing, weather conditions and drone availability. It builds on research dating to 2017 led by Dr. Sheldon Cheskes, medical director at Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine, focusing on rural, remote and Indigenous communities across Ontario.
