Sip and Scholar Brings Brain to Toronto Bar Culture

A new event series is turning nights out into intellectual hangouts, pairing expert talks with complimentary drinks.

Toronto's bar scene just got smarter. Sip and Scholar, a new event series, is transforming a familiar ritual—drinks with friends—into something more: nights out built around expert-led conversations on psychedelics, space, hip-hop, and beyond. The format is simple: show up, grab a complimentary drink, and listen to someone who actually knows their subject break it down for 20 minutes.

Founder Raghu Balasa discovered the concept in New York and brought it home, launching the series locally. What started as an 18-person gathering has grown into regularly sold-out events hosting up to 120 people. The crowd isn't drinking to get drunk; they're there to actually engage their brains while socializing.

The appeal is obvious. In a city of information overload and endless scrolling, there's hunger for live, curated learning. The bar setting removes the stuffiness of lectures or panel discussions—you can dress casually, hold a drink, duck out if you want. It's intellectual life without the gatekeeping.

For Toronto's always-busy crowd, Sip and Scholar hits a sweet spot: education that doesn't feel like work, socializing that actually matters.
