Teen Bitten by Coyote in Markham; Animal Services Investigates

Markham Animal Services is investigating after a 16-year-old girl was bitten by a coyote Thursday morning in a residential part of the city. York Regional Police confirmed the incident and say the girl sustained minor injuries.

Coyote encounters in the Greater Toronto Area have become more frequent in recent years as urban sprawl pushes into wildlife habitat and coyotes adapt to city living. They're typically shy and avoid humans, but spring is breeding season—a time when they're more protective of territory and pups, increasing the risk of confrontation.

The girl's injuries were minor, but the incident serves as a reminder that the urban-wilderness border in Markham and surrounding suburbs is real and shifting. Residents are advised to keep pets indoors or closely supervised, avoid leaving food scraps outside, and give any wildlife plenty of space.

Animal Services will determine whether the coyote involved poses a threat and whether any management action is needed. In the meantime, locals should stay alert and report any aggressive coyote behavior to authorities immediately.
