TTC shutting down Line 1 this weekend for World Cup prep
Service between St. George and Sheppard West will be replaced by shuttle buses Sunday and Monday. Monday commutes could take up to 20 minutes longer.
The TTC will shut down part of Line 1 this weekend to accelerate infrastructure upgrades ahead of the FIFA World Cup, the transit agency announced Tuesday.
Subway service between St. George and Sheppard West stations will be suspended from 12:30 a.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday. Shuttle buses will replace service throughout the closure.
When service resumes Monday morning, trains between Wilson and Lawrence stations will run on a single track until 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 9. The TTC says commutes on that section could take up to 20 minutes longer during partial service.
Additionally, subway service on Line 1 between St. George and Sheppard West will end early each night this week, with trains stopping at 11:59 p.m. through Thursday.
The timing is tight for the city's summer festival season. The All Things Go festival, Dundas West Fest, and Luke Combs concerts at Rogers Stadium are all scheduled for this weekend. Rogers Stadium is within walking distance of both Sheppard West and Downsview Park stations. The TTC says subway service will end at 12:30 a.m. following the Luke Combs concert on Friday, June 5.
"We are doing this to strengthen the system ahead of FIFA, and more importantly for the long-term future of our network," TTC CEO Mandeep Lali said Tuesday. The agency urged concert and festival-goers to check transit schedules and plan ahead.
