WestJet Airlines and Sunwing Vacations have announced they are suspending all Cuba operations and flights indefinitely, extending an earlier pause that had been set to resume in October.

The carriers—which include Sunwing Vacations, WestJet Vacations, and WestJet Vacations Québec—originally halted service in February due to Cuba's worsening energy crisis amid a U.S. blockade of oil shipments. In April, they extended the suspension until October 10, but Friday's announcement signals no near-term return.

Sunwing acknowledged the disappointment in a statement, noting "the strong connection many Canadians have with Cuba and its people." The company added: "Cuba has long been a cherished destination for our guests, and we are mindful of the challenges currently facing local communities, tourism workers, and industry partners who rely on the sector."

Guests with bookings will be contacted directly and offered either a refund or rebooking to an alternative destination.

The suspension comes as Cuba faces severe blackouts, food shortages, and economic collapse following U.S. President Donald Trump's energy blockade, which began after he ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in January. Sunwing said it remains hopeful for the island's recovery and will continue monitoring developments.
