WestJet and Sunwing Vacations Group have shut down all Cuba operations indefinitely. The decision affects flights and vacation packages for Canadian tourists, a market that has been one of the carriers' core offerings for years.

Sunwing Vacations Group, which includes Sunwing Vacations, WestJet Vacations and WestJet Vacations Quebec, announced the suspension Friday. "Cuba has long been a cherished destination for our guests, and we are mindful of the challenges currently facing local communities, tourism workers, and industry partners who rely on the sector," the company said in a statement.

The island nation is in the grip of a severe energy crisis. Fuel and jet fuel shortages have crippled the economy for months. Last week, Cuba's central bank suspended Visa and Mastercard services, cutting off another critical lifeline for tourism. The Government of Canada has updated its travel advisory to warn against non-essential travel due to shortages of fuel, electricity, food, water and medicine.

WestJet and Sunwing had already paused Cuba operations earlier this year, then extended the suspension in April. This indefinite freeze signals they see no near-term resolution. Citizens have had to live with little running water or electricity. A Wall Street Journal report describes the country's tourism industry as "completely unravelling" as fuel shortages deter visitors.

Canadians with existing bookings will be contacted and offered rebooking to alternative destinations or full refunds. The company said it will "continue to monitor developments closely" and provide updates as the situation evolves.
