Burnaby Art Gallery is presenting RESIST!, an exhibition bringing together significant works by four contemporary artists whose practice centres on recording and responding to the world around them — from nuclear devastation to genocide witnessing.
The show runs from September 11 to November 15 and features Palestinian artist Rawan Hassan's work balancing cultural preservation and futurism, Gord Hill's widely renowned The 500 Years of Resistance Comic Book capturing historical and contemporary scenes, Laurence Hyde's rare 1951 wordless novel Southern Cross documenting nuclear testing devastation, and Elizabeth MacKenzie's large-scale Cleave — hundreds of intimate drawings witnessing genocide in Gaza.
The exhibition considers print's historical role in disseminating information, from early newspapers to books and zines, and positions artists as witnesses and documentarians of urgent social movements. Admission is by donation.
