The Michael J Fox Theatre in Burnaby has secured a lifeline after significant community advocacy and negotiations between city officials and the school district.

On June 25, the City of Burnaby announced a one-time grant of $400,000 to keep the theatre open to the public through July 2027 while a new operator is sought. The decision marks a reversal from earlier uncertainty, when the Burnaby Board of Education announced June 30 would be the final day for community access.

The theatre's situation shifted dramatically over recent weeks. First, Burnaby City Council offered a $300,000 grant to extend operations through the end of 2027. The School District initially rejected that offer, but following strong community support and further collaboration, a $400,000 grant was approved instead.

"To our community who rallied so strongly around the Michael J Fox Theatre, we heard you, and we thank you," said Kristin Schnider, Burnaby Board of Education Chair. "We're deeply appreciative of the mayor and City Council for their generous efforts to collaborate with the Board of Education. Together, we found a path forward that keeps the theatre open to the public."

Counsellor Daniel Tetrault, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee, called it a win. "This is a win for Burnaby's cultural community, for Burnaby South Secondary's school community and for all residents who enjoy the performances and celebrations that the Michael J Fox Theatre has hosted over the years."

When the theatre opened in 1993, it was operated by an independent non-profit society. In January 2025, responsibility shifted entirely to the Burnaby School District following management changes within the Michael J Fox Theatre Society. The new arrangement allows the district to seek a non-profit partner while keeping the venue accessible to the community. If a suitable operator is found, a licensing agreement would provide a long-term solution.
