Hen, a new restaurant specializing in authentic Thai chicken rice (Khao Man Gai), is softly opening this week at 15 W. Broadway in Vancouver. The soft opening runs August 5 to 8, starting at 11 a.m. until sold out.
The restaurant's Instagram post read: "Vancouver, we are so excited to meet you. Hen started with a simple mission: share real Thai chicken rice — Khao Man Gai just like we grew up eating. Now we are bringing that same comfort and authenticity to Canada."
Khao Man Gai—which translates directly as "Fatty Rice Chicken"—originated as a Hainanese dish introduced to Thai communities decades ago before becoming one of Thailand's most popular dishes. Unlike the sweet, sour, and spicy profile most Thai food carries, Khao Man Gai's neutral flavors may surprise the uninitiated.
The soft opening menu features four plates: The Original (poached chicken thigh with ginger rice and soybean sauce), The Crispy (crispy boneless chicken with ginger rice and Hen sriracha sauce), The Mix (poached and crispy chicken with ginger rice, soybean sauce, and Hen sriracha sauce), and The Heat (spicy crispy boneless chicken with ginger rice and Hen sriracha sauce). The restaurant also serves Thai Iced Tea and mango sticky rice.
This is Hen's second location; the brand opened its first outpost in Boston in 2019. Instagram comments on the soft opening announcement revealed strong local anticipation. One user posted, "My fave dish. Can't wait 🙌," while another wrote, "Finally 😭 can't wait to come for lunch!"
