Maria Celeste, a new Portuguese restaurant brought to Vancouver by hospitality veterans and brothers Justin and Cristian Isidro, opens on Fraser Street next week. The 36-seat restaurant is a tribute to Portugal's cherished tascas — everyday neighbourhood gathering places where food, wine, and conversation unfold naturally.
Named after their mother, the 1,300 sq. ft. space draws on both brothers' extensive experience. Justin formerly served as director of operations at Michelin-starred Kissa Tanto, Meo, and Bao Bei, and founded Vinicola Portular. Cristian worked in kitchens including Kissa Tanto, Lisboeta in London, and Cozinha das Flores in Porto.
"Growing up in Portugal, tascas were where everyone ended up on any given day because they were all about welcoming the whole community," Justin said. "That's the feeling we want the moment people walk through our doors — there's always a seat for you at our table."
The menu is built to be shared. À la carte options include Cristian's "Pratos," which pay homage to Portugal through B.C. seasonal ingredients: Rissois de Camarão with crisp golden half-moons of sweet shrimp folded through cream with lemon; Bacalhau à Brás made with shredded salt cod, egg, and straw potatoes; and Arroz de Marisco, a Portuguese seafood rice with prawns, mussels, and clams.
Larger plates called "Da Terra" include the surf and turf Pluma de Porco Iberico — pork from the Alentejo with fresh clams — and Bife a Portuguesa, which pairs Carrara Wagyu with a Lisbon-style cafe sauce of cream, butter, and mustard. A chef's menu is also available, with the kitchen bringing dishes to the table based on what's freshest and in season.
"Everything on this menu starts with memories of the way our mãe cooked and the way Portugal eats," Cristian explained. "We take those traditions and let British Columbia's ingredients speak through them. When a plate lands on the table, I want it to taste like you are in Portugal."
The wine list traverses Portugal's regions — Espumante, Vinho Branco, Vinho Tinto, and Vinho Fortificado — with structured reds from the Alentejo, the freshness of Vinho Verde, and the elegance of Bairrada, guided by a philosophy of "vou para a terra" (deep respect for place).
Maria Celeste opens for a soft opening period beginning July 29 and officially launches Tuesday, Aug. 4. At launch, it will be open Tuesday to Sunday from 5 to 11 p.m. The team encourages reservations but welcomes walk-ins. The restaurant is located at 4181 Fraser St., Vancouver.
