Vancouver's dining scene is refreshing itself this fall with a handful of anticipated openings that signal momentum across neighborhoods and cuisines.
Bento Cafe YVR is expanding beyond its established Kitsilano location at 1822 West 1st Avenue. The new Kerrisdale spot at 2156 West 41st Avenue brings the Japanese cafe's seasonal menu of Teishoku set meals—balanced, wholesome offerings with rice, soup, a side, and a main—to the west side. The original location holds a 4.5-star rating on Google, with typical meals hovering around $27.
Downtown is gaining a major player with C Market Coffee's first Vancouver location at 1185 West Georgia Street. The brand behind the largest cafe in the city—a sprawling 5,000-plus-square-foot space at 195 E. 36th Avenue—announced the expansion on Instagram, with opening planned for this month. The downtown spot brings the brand's scale and appeal closer to the core.
At the entrance of Granville Island, 1500 West 2nd Avenue (the former home of Tru Cafe), a collaboration between local celebrity chef Duran "Dman" Bodasing and Herschel Miedzygorski is launching Herschel's Deli and Schmeer. They're calling it Vancouver's first proper New York City Jewish deli, bringing bagels hand-rolled, boiled, and baked fresh daily in varieties from plain to cinnamon raisin, Asiago cheese, and pumpernickel. Classic sandwiches include the Lox and Schmeer—smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion, capers, cucumber, tomato, and lemon—and the BEC on Everything: fried egg, crispy bacon, aged cheddar, arugula, tomato, and herb aioli. Bodasing announced on Instagram: "HELLO VANCOUVER BC WE ARE HERSCHEL'S DELI AND SCHMEER!! Get ready for some New York City Jewish Deli Soul Vibes with a kick of Canadian style."
Fine dining on Commercial Drive is also in motion. Chef Steven Che, behind one of Vancouver's top pizzerias Just Pizza, is preparing to open Haisan this fall, featuring a sixteen-course tasting menu bringing refined technique and ambition to the neighborhood.
