A new cocktail bar and restaurant is coming to Gastown. The Moon will open at 59 Powell Street in a compact space that seats about 40 when full — split into a 15-seat lounge and 25-seat dining room.
Sonia Symoom, one of the people behind the new project, said those behind the Moon have lived in Gastown for five years and decided to pursue the space when it became available last year. "We're building the cocktail bar and restaurant we wish our neighbourhood had," the team said in a social media post.
Symoom and her husband are partners in the Toronto restaurant Lardo. While the Moon will focus on cocktails and dining, specific menu details haven't been released yet beyond an exclusive wine from Ursa Major Winery. An opening date and hours have not been announced.
The space previously housed the Dugout, a supportive space for people experiencing homelessness in the Downtown Eastside that operated there for many years. The Dugout relocated to a temporary space at 57 East Hastings Street in late 2025 and will eventually move into 239 Main Street.
