Wrinkled-skin milk pudding comes to Richmond
Hé Made Dessert opens on No. 3 Road with traditional Cantonese sweets including double-layer pudding and egg tarts.
A new Cantonese dessert shop has opened in Richmond with a menu centered on wrinkled-skin milk pudding—a traditional double-layer dessert with creamy pudding beneath a folded milk skin.
Hé Made Dessert, opening June 2 at #100-5951 No. 3 Road in London Plaza, takes over the former T Plus Patisserie and Beard Papa's unit. The 30-seat spot seats guests for casual dining or takeout.
The pudding, which originated in Shunde, a city in Guangdong Province known for its food culture, is made from milk, egg whites, and sugar. It can be served hot or cold and resembles Italian panna cotta.
"There's many Asian dessert places in Richmond and Vancouver, but we wanted to bring another option and more traditional items to Richmond's food scene," said co-owner Max Meng. The four owner-friends, who met at an international high school in Asia, previously worked in the bubble tea business but wanted to move beyond that and create a hybrid casual-restaurant space.
Beyond the signature pudding, the menu includes golden cassava ginger soup, ground black sesame paste, stewed pear dessert with personalized toppings, in-house made flaky egg tarts, curry fish balls, triple sauce steamed rice noodles, and shaved ice with fresh fruit. Beverages include bitter melon lemon tea and fruit tea. An open kitchen allows guests to watch mochi being made fresh.
Hé Made opens June 2 with hours from 2 to 11 p.m.
