Zumi brings revolving sushi bar to Vancouver's West End this winter

A new sushi restaurant is moving into the Alberni tower in Vancouver's West End this winter. Zumi Revolving Sushi Bar, opening at 1588 Alberni St., will be the city's first kaiten — a revolving sushi delivery system — though this one works differently than most.
Instead of a traditional rotating sushi train, Zumi will use a cedar conveyor belt moving at the pace of a slow walk. According to the restaurant's website, the design borrows from the Alberni tower's architecture by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. "Wood you want to touch, light that stays low, and a belt that moves at the pace of a slow walk," the site reads.
Seasonally changing plates will travel directly from the kitchen to diners' tables via the belt in under a minute, with no items sitting under glass or waiting for a ticket. Plates range from $5 to $8 each and include hamachi, maguro, and uni. A cedar counter in front of the chefs will offer additional options not on the belt.
Zumi will also offer to-go options. The restaurant distinguishes itself from Sushi Aboard, which operates on Denman Street — Sushi Aboard confirmed it has no involvement with Zumi.
