Trumpeter and bandleader Daniel Hersog brings his eponymous Jazz Orchestra to a homecoming performance at the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts at Capilano University on June 25 at 7:30 p.m.
Hersog graduated from CapU in 2007 and is currently on the faculty of the institution's jazz studies department, giving him true home-field advantage.
The 17-member big band features some of the local jazz scene's standout players: Brad Turner (trumpet), Steve Kaldestad (saxophone), Bruno Hubert (piano), James Danderfer (saxophone, clarinet), and Bernie Arai (drums). Jazz Times described Hersog's writing as "directly in the lineage of great jazz composers like Gil Evans." His 2023 album Open Spaces (Folk Songs Reimagined) showcased his arranging skill on unexpected material, including versions of the Tragically Hip's "Ahead By a Century" and Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."
For this North Shore Jazz performance, Hersog and company will be joined by guest vocalist Darynn Dean. The Los Angeles-based Dean has been pegged as one to watch, having studied under jazz legends Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter and shared stages with Dave Koz and Aaron Parks. In a live review, Music Connection lauded Dean's "incredible soul flavour" and described her stage presence as "luminous" and "spellbinding."
The performance is part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and North Shore Jazz series.
