Jimmy Eat World plays Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre; band opens Bleed American anniversary run

Jimmy Eat World delivered a sold-out performance at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, marking the Arizona quartet's return to Vancouver after nine years and the largest crowds of their career on the 25th-anniversary tour for their seminal album Bleed American.

The band opened with "Clarity," surprising the crowd with an unexpected start before powering through early hits "Your New Aesthetic," "Blister," and "Lucky Denver Mint." A dramatic stage transformation—with billowing smoke, red lights, and a bank of spheres pulled away to reveal a larger setup—accompanied the pounding title track "Bleed American," setting up a rip through the iconic album without breaks.

Motion City Soundtrack warmed the crowd with a 13-track set mixing old and new material. Lead singer Justin Pierre, battling electric nerve pain that has limited his movement and guitar playing this tour, showcased charisma through his "charmingly winsome voice," a bedazzled disco cane, and robot dance moves. Synth player Jesse Johnson energized the stage with youthful enthusiasm. The band's 2015 hit "Everything is Alright" drew rousing sing-alongs from floor fans.

The Beaumont-housed performance confirmed what organizers already knew: appetite for '90s and 2000s nostalgia acts remains strong, and Vancouver audiences still turn out for bands that defined early-aughts pop-punk and emo.
