A coroner's inquest into the death of 61-year-old Jimmie Johannesson will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 27, at Burnaby Coroners' Court, 20th floor, Metrotower II, 4720 Kingsway.
Johannnesson's death was reported to the BC Coroners Service on April 8, 2022, following events involving the Surrey RCMP detachment. Under Section 18(2) of the Coroners Act, inquests are mandatory for any deaths that occur while a person is detained by or in the custody of a peace officer.
Presiding Coroner Kirsten Everett and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding the death, including the identity of the deceased, how, when, where, and by what means the individual came to their death, and a classification for the death.
A coroner's inquest is a non-fault-finding public inquiry designed to determine facts, make recommendations where appropriate and supported by evidence to prevent deaths in similar circumstances, and ensure public confidence that the circumstances will not be overlooked, concealed, or ignored.
The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations, though they must not make any finding of legal responsibility or express any conclusion of law.
