The Delta Islanders won Game 1 of the BC Junior Tier 1 Lacrosse League playoff series 12-11 over the Langley Thunder after 20 minutes of overtime on Saturday, July 4, at the Langley Events Centre.
Three times in overtime—twice in the first extra period and once in the second—Langley grabbed the lead only to have Delta answer back. The Islanders scored with 37 seconds remaining in overtime, and the Thunder appeared to force a third overtime period before the tying goal came after time had expired and was immediately waved off.
Delta led for much of the game, holding 4-3 and 7-5 leads at the intermissions and extending it to 8-5 just 30 seconds into the third period. But over the final 39 minutes 30 seconds of the 80-minute contest, Langley outscored the Islanders 6-4.
Christopher Paddon made 46 saves on 57 shots for Delta. Wyatt Groom led the Islanders with three goals and four points, while Oliver Hoegg and Carter McIntyre each chipped in two goals and an assist.
The teams met Monday, July 6, for Game 2 at 7 p.m. at Ladner Leisure Centre. If Langley won, a third and deciding game would follow Tuesday night in Langley. Coquitlam beat New West 18-5 in another first-round series Sunday night.
