Vancouver Football Club fell 2–1 to five-time Canadian Champions CF Montreal on Wednesday night in the first of two quarterfinal matches in the Telus Canadian Championship at The Stadium at Langley Events Centre.

VFC scored first, with Damiano Pecile and Nicolas Mezquida giving the Eagles a 1–0 lead during the second period. Montreal retaliated about 10 minutes later, tying things up in the 63rd minute when Dagur Porhallsson's shot was inadvertently deflected in by Vancouver netminder Matteo Campagna for an own goal.

With only minutes left on the clock, Montreal's leading scorer Prince Owusu placed a successful penalty shot past Vancouver's keeper, sending the ball past a keeper who went the wrong direction. Head coach Martin Nash said his team's attitude and application were good but that quality in finishing let them down at times. He described the late penalty goal as frustrating, noting his team had virtually no time to respond.

Nash said there's a lot to fight for when VFC faces Montreal again this July 13 at 4:30 p.m. PT in Quebec. The quarterfinals consist of two-legged ties, with the winner advancing on aggregate score. If the aggregate score is tied after two games, teams proceed to 30 minutes of extra time, followed by a penalty shootout if necessary. The path to the Voyageurs Cup continues through a two-match semifinal series in September, with the finals scheduled for late October.
