Maple Ridge RCMP warn businesses of counterfeit $50 and $100 bills in circulation

Maple Ridge RCMP have received at least eight reports of counterfeit $50 and $100 bills circulating at several businesses throughout the municipality in recent weeks, prompting a public warning Tuesday.
While most affected businesses identified the fraudulent notes and reported them to police, some accepted counterfeit currency and suffered financial losses. Under Canadian law, businesses that accept counterfeit bills will not be reimbursed for their losses. Knowingly possessing or using counterfeit money is a criminal offence.
"We want the public to be aware of this recent fraud trend so that they can take the necessary steps to protect themselves," said Maple Ridge RCMP Frontline Sergeant Daniel Rettenbacher.
RCMP are encouraging business owners to ensure their employees are familiar with the security features on Canadian bank notes and trained to identify counterfeit currency. The force recommends businesses establish clear procedures for handling cash transactions. Customers are urged to exercise caution and verify bank notes when accepting or depositing cash.
RCMP have not disclosed whether the counterfeit bills have been traced to a specific source or person. Anyone with information about the counterfeit currency is asked to contact Maple Ridge RCMP.
