Vancouver Police are investigating at least five incidents of "blessing scams" targeting seniors since late May, in which suspects convince victims to reveal valuables for spiritual cleansing.

According to Const. Darren Wong, the scammers use fear, manipulation, and cultural beliefs. "These suspects prey on the vulnerability of our seniors, using fear, manipulation, and cultural beliefs to steal their life savings," Wong said.

In one incident on June 6 near Marine Gateway shopping mall at Southwest Marine Drive and Yukon Street, two female suspects approached a woman and convinced her that a "misfortune or curse would soon befall her family." They offered to perform a spiritual "blessing" on her valuables. The woman was escorted a few blocks away to meet a third suspect, who instructed her to go home and return with her items for the ritual.

When she returned, the suspects stole $15,000 in cash and a gold ring. The victim only discovered the theft when she arrived back home.

Police say the incidents appear random, but based on CCTV footage, investigators believe the encounters are targeted. They are releasing video footage in hopes that someone recognizes the suspects and to warn the public. "We are releasing this video in hopes that someone recognizes these suspects, and to remind everyone to speak with their elderly family members about these scams," Wong said.
