Vancouver Police are warning residents after a senior-targeted distraction theft near East 11th Avenue and Victoria Drive on July 15, around 12:30 p.m.
A 76-year-old woman waiting for family was approached by an unknown woman who said she looked like her mother and mentioned it was her mother's birthday. While hugging the senior, the woman removed her gold necklace—which had two gold rings attached—and replaced it with another necklace. About 30 minutes later, the senior realized the theft.
The suspect is described as having olive skin, mid-30s, round face, and short dark hair. A dark green four-door sedan, driven by a man with similar features, is believed to be connected to the incident.
Vancouver Police are urging residents with elderly relatives to warn them against allowing strangers close contact and to keep valuable jewelry hidden. Anyone with dashcam footage or home security video from the area between 12:15 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday is asked to contact VPD.
