Blessing scams targeting Vancouver's elderly Chinese seniors surge to 13 cases in 2026

Blessing scams targeting elderly Chinese seniors in Vancouver have nearly doubled this year, with 13 reported cases and losses exceeding $300,000 in cash, gold, and jewelry — some victims losing their entire life savings and family heirlooms.

Compare that to six such incidents at the same point last year. "We know there are more because the victims we talk to tell us of the deep shame they feel of having been tricked in this way," said Shiv Gill, Vancouver Police Department inspector.

The scam typically begins with a cold approach, then escalates into emotional manipulation. Victims are told they've won a lottery, inherited money, or need to help someone in distress — narratives designed to bypass rational thinking. Similar schemes include grandparent and romance scams, all preying on the trust of older adults across the province.

More than half of these blessing scams have occurred in East and Southeast Vancouver. Police believe the con artists are operating internationally, coordinating with agencies in other countries to target vulnerable residents.

Linds Yauk, learning events and outreach coordinator for Seniors First BC, emphasized the warning signs. "Be very aware if you're being pulled into the emotional aspect of things — if someone is making you feel excited or offering a special opportunity, if there's a threat or if you're feeling scared, anxious, or panicking. Those are all big red flags."

The VPD urges residents to report any suspected scams to police and reminds community members to trust their instincts when something feels off.
