A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the West Richmond Pavilion, a new 10,830-square-foot fieldhouse at Hugh Boyd Community Park in west Richmond.

Construction is expected to begin shortly on the nearly $20 million facility, which will serve as a "central hub for tournaments and sporting events" according to the City of Richmond.

The pavilion will include an outdoor viewing deck, two multi-purpose rooms, offices, change rooms, public washrooms, storage space, and a referee room. Beyond supporting day-to-day recreation use, the facility can host elite provincial and national championships. The multi-purpose rooms may also be available for community groups, including the West Richmond Community Centre.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie called the new fieldhouse an "exciting investment" in the city's future. "This new facility will provide much-needed amenities for athletes, families and community organizations while enhancing Hugh Boyd Community Park as a premier destination for recreation and sport," he said.

The project's budget is $19.85 million, with $17.7 million funded through the provincial government's Growing Communities Fund. The West Richmond Pavilion is expected to be completed in early 2027.
