Surrey construction begins on 60-bed mental-health and substance-use facility opening spring 2028

Construction has begun on a 60-bed mental-health and substance-use treatment facility in Surrey at 6833 and 6869 King George Boulevard, with beds expected to be available to patients by spring 2028. The project has a budget of up to $57 million.

The facility will provide specialized care for people with brain injuries and will include involuntary admission beds for Fraser Health region residents experiencing the most severe mental-health and substance-use challenges. The project involves the provincial government, Fraser Health, the Provincial Health Services Authority, and local partners. Premier David Eby announced the project in July 2026.

The new 60 beds will add to more than 2,000 existing mental-health beds in B.C. for voluntary and involuntary admissions under the Mental Health Act. Recent related facilities include the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre and Spiritwood Homes in Maple Ridge. The province continues to assess locations for future designated mental-health treatment beds in other B.C. regions.

Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Health, said in the announcement: "Specialized care and treatment for patients with the most complex needs is a vital part of their path to wellness." Garry Begg, parliamentary secretary for Surrey infrastructure and MLA for Surrey-Guildford, noted: "Surrey has seen a clear and growing need for more mental-health and substance-use supports. These new beds will make a real difference for individuals and families by improving access to care when it's needed most."

The expansion of designated mental-health services under the Mental Health Act was identified as a key recommendation by Dr. Daniel Vigo, B.C.'s first chief scientific adviser for psychiatry, toxic drugs, and concurrent disorders, who was appointed in June 2024.
