Surrey has issued 13,844 net new housing units over the past two and a half years, exceeding its Housing Action Plan target of 13,000 units, the city announced Wednesday.
B.C.'s second-largest city by population remains on track to complete all initiatives outlined in its Housing Action Plan, which set the 13,000-unit target by the end of 2026—representing a 27.8 per cent increase in Surrey's housing supply. "I'm pleased at the incredible progress we've made and the meaningful steps we've taken to reduce red tape, modernize our processes and make it easier to build housing in Surrey," Mayor Brenda Locke said in a statement.
The Housing Action Plan, launched in 2023 with $100.7 million in federal funding, outlines initiatives to increase housing supply in the short and long term and create new opportunities for affordable housing.
Surrey's population is estimated at 740,838 people as of 2026, according to BC Stats. The city has also surpassed its provincial housing target, issuing final occupancy for 5,307 net new housing units between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026—14.4 per cent above its target of 4,639 units.
