Sixteen residents were displaced after a structure fire in Surrey's Whalley neighbourhood Sunday, September 6, afternoon. Surrey Fire Service responded to the house at 125B Street near 104 Avenue, where Assistant Fire Chief Mike McNamara said heavy smoke and flames were coming from the roof and side of the structure when crews arrived.
Five of the sixteen residents were initially unaccounted for, but the landlord provided confirmation that all occupants were out of the building. Firefighters attacked the blaze from outside once that was confirmed. The home's clay roof collapsed due to water from firefighting efforts.
No injuries were reported. Surrey Police Service determined the fire does not appear to have been suspicious. The cause remains under investigation.
This displacement adds to a pattern of major residential fires affecting the region. In June, a fire at a Surrey house with a childcare facility was contained quickly.
