Surrey's week ahead brings tribute concerts, theatre, and live poetry

Surrey's entertainment calendar this week features concerts spanning country, tribute acts, classical and Punjabi music, plus theatre and spoken-word performance.

Playing for Proz: Celebrating Dr. David Proznick takes place Saturday, September 12 at Surrey Arts Centre's Main Stage theatre. The evening honours Dr. Proznick, known affectionately as "Proz," described as "a beloved mentor" who "inspired countless students and colleagues through his passion for music, dedication to education, and commitment to community."

At Bell Performing Arts Centre, The Highwaymen Show tribute concert runs Sunday, September 13, featuring music by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson, toured by VaughnCo Entertainment. The Alan Jackson Experience, another tribute, plays Thursday, September 17. Debi Live, featuring renowned Punjabi singer Debi Makhsoospuri, comes September 19. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's "Mozart, Sibelius & Debussy" concert kicks off the VSO's Surrey Sundays series Sunday, September 20 at 4 p.m. Roohani Shaam with Padma Shri Hans Raj Hans follows Friday, September 25, offering "soulful Sufi music and mesmerizing Qawwali."

For theatre, "Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane," presented by KVP Entertainers and KVP Heritage, plays Friday, September 11 at Bell Performing Arts Centre — described as "a moving story filled with emotions, relationships, laughter, and unexpected moments." "Frozen in Time" brings two princess characters for storytelling and sing-alongs Saturday, September 12, also at Bell.

Clayton Coffee House, at Performing Arts Studio, Clayton Community Centre, 7155 187a St., hosts monthly spoken-word, poetry and music performances, free to attend from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jazz Vespers in the Valley offers hour-long concerts at Northwood United Church, 8855 156 St., on select Sundays from fall to spring at 3:30 p.m. with a suggested $10 donation.
