The City of White Rock honoured longtime school trustee Laurae McNally at a city council meeting on September 21, recognizing her 46 years of service to students, teachers and schools in the community.
McNally was first elected to the Surrey Board of Education in 1980 and has served as a trustee for four decades. Mayor Megan Knight opened the council meeting by highlighting McNally's "extraordinary impact on White Rock's school community."
"Throughout those years she's been a fierce advocate for White Rock schools, championing music programs, learning centres and sports opportunities for students," Knight said. "She didn't just attend board meetings, she showed up for our community."
Knight described McNally's deep presence in local schools. She dressed as Mrs. Claus during the Christmas season, judged cooking classes, kept score at basketball games, officiated track meets, and served pancake breakfasts to Earl Marriott Secondary graduating students before they crossed the stage. McNally attended countless school concerts, performances and plays throughout her tenure.
"Four decades is a long time," Knight noted, emphasizing that McNally had been part of the lives of multiple generations of White Rock students.
Knight presented McNally with flowers, a gift and a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the City of White Rock.
As McNally steps away from the trustee seat, three candidates are vying for the position: Dee Reiter, Phillip Warner and Laura Lattanzio.
