One of the world's biggest video game publishers is establishing a new Vancouver studio aimed at redefining sports video games.
2K announced Small Axe Studios on August 13, via LinkedIn. The company, whose parent Take-Two also owns Rockstar Games (developer of Grand Theft Auto), is backing the studio as part of its commitment to investing in new IP and growing its sports portfolio.
Led by Aaron McHardy, who previously worked at EA Sports on the FIFA franchise, the studio combines startup passion with 2K's global scale. Gary Peterson, head of design, also comes from EA, where he worked on NBA Street, NBA Live, and Need for Speed with Criterion.
"By combining the hunger of a startup with the power of a global gaming giant, we are here to redefine the future of sports video games," the studio states on its website. "To achieve our ambitious goals, we've intentionally assembled a world-class team whose passion for sport mirrors the rich diversity and distinctiveness of global fandom."
Small Axe has posted job openings with some paying over $200,000, including the gameplay design director position. The studio has not yet revealed what specific title it will develop, though 2K signalled the project has significant ambitions.
