A 78-year-old woman remains in stable but critical condition after an alleged assault near Surrey Central Station on Tuesday, July 28.

The woman was walking just outside the station around 3 p.m. when a man walked up behind her and allegedly shoulder-checked her as he passed. She fell and struck her head on a concrete wall and pavement, sustaining a serious head injury. BC Emergency Health Services transported her to hospital.

Metro Vancouver Transit Police arrested Evan Michael Scott Abbott later that evening and charged him with aggravated assault. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance at Surrey Provincial Court on August 19.

"Transit Police would like to thank the two witnesses who each saw the incident unfold, called 9-1-1 and remained on the scene to assist the victim and provide statements to police officers," said Const. Sunny Kainth. "We appreciate the time they took to help a stranger and assist with the investigation."
