The BC Wildfire Service has suspended airtanker and helicopter operations near the Brunswick Creek wildfire after reports of unauthorized drone activity, putting both emergency responders and the public at greater risk.

Since Highway 1 reopened yesterday between Boston Bar and Jackass Summit, the Wildfire Service has documented drivers speeding through the fire zone and stopping to film firefighting efforts. Most critically, a drone was spotted operating near the southeast flank of the Brunswick Creek wildfire while emergency air crews were actively fighting the blaze.

Wildfires are automatically designated flight-restricted areas. Violations carry penalties of up to $25,000 in fines and up to 18 months in prison.

The Wildfire Service is reminding the public that the speed limit through the fire zone is 60 km/h and there is no stopping permitted. Drivers should expect continued activity in the area as crews work to contain the two out-of-control wildfires burning in the Fraser Canyon.
