An injured Canada goose struck by a rock during Powell River's Canada Day celebrations on July 1 was rescued this week and sent to a wildlife centre.
Witnesses at Willingdon Beach reported seeing the bird flailing in the water, unable to pick its head up, and drifting toward Townsite. The Conservation Office Service was notified of the incident.
On Tuesday, July 7, Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society (PROWLS) received a call from the barge terminal, where the goose had been spotted. Two City Transfer employees had caught the bird and locked it in an air-conditioned forklift to keep it safe.
When PROWLS arrived, the goose was found to be very thin and had a severe head injury. The team kept her comfortable overnight and transported her to MARS Wildlife Rescue in Courtenay on Wednesday, July 8.
PROWLS thanked the City Transfer employees and BC Ferries staff who assisted in the rescue and transport.
