Canada plays Morocco in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 at BC Place on Saturday, July 4 at 10 a.m.—the men's team's biggest match ever.
The Canadians have already made history by reaching this stage for the first time. In their only two previous World Cup appearances in 1986 and 2022, they never got past the group stage. This run has unified the country behind them, with watch parties planned across Canada from Victoria to St. John's.
Head coach Jesse Marsch described the upcoming match as a "free hit"—playing with house money against the world's sixth-ranked team. Morocco finished as a semifinalist in 2022 and brings 22 players from Europe's top five leagues, compared to eight for Canada.
"We wanted to get to the point in the tournament where we were playing against big opponents, and Morocco is exactly that," Marsch said Friday. "This is a team with literally no weaknesses."
Canada's run has already surpassed expectations. The team finished ahead of Croatia, four-time champion Germany, and three-time finalist Netherlands in the group stage. Watch parties are booked solid across Vancouver and the country, with bars and FIFA Fan Fest sites preparing for massive crowds regardless of the result.
