Recall petition against MLA Dallas Brodie falls far short of required signatures

A recall petition against Vancouver-Quilchena MLA Dallas Brodie, leader of the OneBC Party, has failed to gather the necessary signatures by a wide margin.
To succeed, the petition needed signatures from at least 40 percent of the 15,232 people eligible to vote in the riding on October 19, 2024—a total of 6,093 signatures. The campaign organized by riding resident Dorothy Cumming managed to collect just 3,663 signatures between May 21 and the July 20 deadline.
Brodie responded by taunting the recall organizers. "I didn't lift a finger or spend a penny to oppose the recall, and they still failed miserably," she told media in a written statement. "They had over 110 canvassers and three organizations spending money against me, which I count as free advertising." She added that she'd like to "thank" the recall organizers for creating awareness of her campaign against the "reconciliation industry."
If successful, the recall would have forced Brodie to vacate her seat in the legislature, triggering a byelection within 90 days. Since recall rules were enacted in 1995, 31 petitions have attempted to remove a legislator, though none have succeeded. The 1998 campaign to recall Parksville-Qualicum MLA Paul Reitsma did gather enough signatures, but he resigned before the petition was verified.
Brodie was elected in 2024 as a B.C. Conservative but left the party after sparring with former Leader John Rustad over her social media posts questioning evidence of children's graves at residential schools.
