A grassroots recall campaign against Vancouver-Quilchena MLA Dallas Brodie has failed to gather enough signatures to trigger a recall vote. Elections BC announced Monday that organizers collected 3,663 signatures—roughly a quarter of the 15,232 required under the Recall and Initiative Act.
The petition ran for 60 days starting May 14, marshalling 118 registered canvassers in an effort that organizers hailed as the highest signature total in a recall campaign over the past decade. "In a riding where voter turnout in the 2024 provincial election was just 58.45 per cent, collecting signatures from 40 per cent of eligible voters was always going to be a significant challenge," the Recall Brodie campaign said in a statement.
Brodie, who switched from the BC Conservatives to form the OneBC party, became the target of recall efforts after publicly making disparaging statements about testimony from Indigenous residential school survivors. The campaign pointed to resident concerns about her conduct, her representation of the riding, and her focus on building the OneBC brand at the expense of local issues like schools and safety.
"I wish my elected representative was someone else," said campaign organizer Dorothy Cumming, a retired nurse. "Someone who had even five per cent of the dedication to working with and for the constituents of this riding that I've seen from the canvassing and organizing team behind this recall."
Organizers pledged to continue advocacy work on recall reform and turn their attention to the next provincial election. This was the 31st recall petition since the act came into effect in 1995—none has yet met the signature threshold.
