British Columbia is establishing its first-ever dedicated ash-dispersal site on a waterfront, addressing a long-standing gap in funeral infrastructure for communities needing culturally appropriate places to honour their dead.
The City of Delta is upgrading parts of Fraser Viewpoint on Tilbury Island, creating a gathering space for the respectful dispersal of cremated remains in the Fraser River. The site currently features a reflective garden and seating area; new enhancements will improve safe foreshore access. The City is investing up to $225,000 in improvements to make the location welcoming and accessible.
Attorney General Niki Sharma said the project responds to years of unmet need. "For years, people south of the Fraser, including many members of the South Asian community, have had to travel abroad or transport a loved one's ashes overseas to carry out important funeral rites," she said. The space will allow families to perform final rites in accordance with their cultural, spiritual, and faith traditions without leaving the province.
Ranjit Hayer, president of Khalsa Diwan Society Vancouver, called the project significant for all British Columbians, particularly the South Asian community. "People from all faiths will now have a dedicated gathering space to respectfully perform final rites for their loved one," he said.
The B.C. government has published guidelines for other municipalities that wish to establish similar ash-dispersal sites, outlining steps to create these spaces in a respectful and sustainable manner.
