A Vancouver-based fusion energy company has been recognized by Time magazine as the world's top green-technology firm for 2026.

General Fusion, headquartered in Richmond, topped a ranking of 250 companies compiled by Time and research firm Statista. The ranking measures firms developing or providing technologies and products that help mitigate or reverse environmental damage.

The company specializes in magnetized target fusion — a technique that aims to produce energy by fusing atoms together, mimicking the process that powers the sun. Unlike traditional fusion approaches, the method avoids superconducting magnets and high-powered lasers, instead using existing materials and a machine that squeezes extremely hot gas with liquid metal to trigger fusion reactions.

General Fusion CEO Greg Twinney said in a statement that the recognition comes "at a pivotal moment" as the company plans to become the first publicly traded pure-play fusion company, going public on the U.S. stock exchange this year through a SPAC deal.

"We are on the path to industry-defining technical milestones to deliver practical fusion power in the next decade," Twinney said. The company completed its first demonstration machine using the new technology in 2025.

Eavor, a Calgary-based geothermal technology firm, ranked second in the Time list.

The recognition underscores the region's growing role in the global clean-energy transition.
