Pete Fry's Green Party campaign toppled incumbent Ken Sim's ABC Vancouver on October 17 with a smaller budget and a lean, effective organization built over four years.
Fry won with nearly 100,000 votes to Sim's over 67,000 — a margin exceeding 22,000. Every Green candidate running for City Council, Park Board, and Vancouver School Board won their seat, while COPE took four council seats and OneCity at least one. Fry becomes Canada's first Green Party mayor.
The Greens had less money than both ABC and OneCity, but campaign manager Khadoni Pitt Chambers said their dollars stretched further. "When you put $1 into the Green vote campaign, that dollar will stretch further than any other thing," Chambers said Urbanized. Campaign tactics focused on social media, positive messaging, community engagement, and coordination with other progressive parties.
Stewart Prest, a political science professor at the University of British Columbia, credited the Greens' ground game. "They didn't necessarily have the resources for what is sometimes called the 'air war' in politics — that sense of advertising budgets — but they had a very effective ground game," Prest said.
The campaign concentrated volunteer efforts in Mount Pleasant, East Vancouver, and Kitsilano. Sim, in his concession speech, called the time he spent in office "probably the most meaningful thing I've been involved with." Fry told supporters at election night headquarters: "Thank you for putting your trust in me and my team here. We're not going to let you down."
