Independent British Columbia legislator Jordan Kealy has elected to face a jury trial as he denies a charge of sexual assault.

Kealy was charged over allegations dating back to between January and September of 2024, before he was elected as a B.C. Conservative member of the legislature that October. He has since left the party to sit as an Independent.

Kealy made his first court appearance Monday in Fort St. John, where his lawyer waived the reading of the charge. His next appearance is scheduled for August 10 in Fort St. John court, where he says he expects to formally enter his not-guilty plea.

Kealy has denied the allegations and stated he is innocent and "will prove that in court."
